Upside down text is writing that looks flipped, like ʇxǝʇ uʍop ǝpısdn, made by swapping each letter for a look-alike character and reversing the order. This upside down text generator does both at once, using IPA, Latin and even Hebrew characters, so the result reads correctly when the screen is turned over.
Type in the box and press Copy; the generator flips and reverses your text in one step. Below are 42 upside down examples, a letter-by-letter table showing which 16 lowercase letters get special characters, and where flipped text is accepted.

Which letters get special characters
Of the 26 lowercase letters, 16 are swapped for a special character, 6 borrow another ordinary letter (b and q, d and p, n and u trade places) and 4 already look the same upside down (o, s, x, z). The swaps come from several Unicode blocks, which makes upside down text one of the more surprising of our fancy text styles.
| Letter | Flipped | Code point | Block |
|---|---|---|---|
| a | ɐ | U+0250 | IPA Extensions |
| c | ɔ | U+0254 | IPA Extensions |
| e | ǝ | U+01DD | Latin Extended-B |
| f | ɟ | U+025F | IPA Extensions |
| g | ƃ | U+0183 | Latin Extended-B |
| h | ɥ | U+0265 | IPA Extensions |
| i | ı | U+0131 | Latin Extended-A |
| j | ɾ | U+027E | IPA Extensions |
| k | ʞ | U+029E | IPA Extensions |
| l | ן | U+05DF | Hebrew |
| m | ɯ | U+026F | IPA Extensions |
| r | ɹ | U+0279 | IPA Extensions |
| t | ʇ | U+0287 | IPA Extensions |
| v | ʌ | U+028C | IPA Extensions |
| w | ʍ | U+028D | IPA Extensions |
| y | ʎ | U+028E | IPA Extensions |
Almost all of these sit inside the Basic Multilingual Plane, which is why upside down text survives older apps better than bold or cursive. Our article on why upside down text is not rotation explains the Hebrew l, and the guide to 10 fancy text styles and the Unicode blocks behind them compares the blocks.

Why the order is reversed too
Turning a word over also turns its reading order around, so the generator writes the last letter first. Flipping letters without reversing gives text that looks upside down but reads backwards when you rotate the screen; reversing without flipping gives mirror-order text that is still the right way up.
Capital letters flip too, but with more compromises: several have no clean look-alike, so the result is less convincing than lowercase. For the best effect, type in lowercase.
Where upside down text works: Discord, Instagram and CODM
Whether upside down text survives depends on the field, not on the generator. A username field usually accepts only plain letters, while a display name or bio accepts almost any Unicode character up to a length limit. The table below pairs each platform’s published rule with what it means for upside down text; the last column says honestly whether we have pasted it on a live account.
| Platform and field | Published rule | What that means for upside down text | Live paste test |
|---|---|---|---|
| Discord username | 2–32 characters; lowercase letters, numbers, underscore and period only | Rejected: upside down text uses characters outside that set | Rule from Discord’s help center; not pasted |
| Discord display name | 1–32 characters; special characters allowed | Allowed by the rule; most flipped letters are one UTF-16 code unit each | Not yet tested on a live account |
| Instagram username | Letters, numbers, periods and underscores | Rejected: styled letters are not in that set | Not yet tested on a live account |
| Instagram bio | 150 characters | Allowed by the rule; long lines may hit the limit sooner than plain text | Not yet tested on a live account |
| Call of Duty: Mobile name | Short name field; published guides disagree on the exact limit (14–16 characters) and the game filters some symbols | May be refused or shortened; the game decides | Not yet tested in game |
Rules reviewed 7 October 2026. Platforms change their filters without notice, so paste into the real field before you rely on it. Upside down text FAQ
How do I type upside down?
Type your text in the box above and press Copy. The generator swaps each letter for a flipped look-alike and reverses the order, so you can paste it anywhere that accepts Unicode text.
Why does upside down text use a Hebrew letter?
No Latin character looks like a flipped l, but the Hebrew final nun ן does, so the generator borrows it.
Does upside down text work on Discord?
In messages and display names, yes, within the 32-character display name limit. Discord usernames accept only lowercase letters, numbers, underscores and periods.
Is upside down text the same as mirror text?
No. Mirror text reverses letters left to right, while upside down text turns them over top to bottom and reverses the order. Pasting flipped text back into the box only restores some letters, so keep a copy of the original.
For other looks, the SoShareIT Fancy Text generator turns the same words into bold, cursive, bubble or small caps in one tap.
